Top That!

This clip from Teen Witch (1989) is the future of comedy.

I'm actually being sort of serious. For one thing, it is entirely unselfconscious; there's no fourth-wall nonsense, which has gotten painfully stale.

For another thing, the unselfconsciousness, combined with the complete ridiculousness of the outfits, dancing, and rapping (and the magic), along with the genuine, intelligible motivations makes it, like, three straight inside-the-park home runs (i.e., rare). It's like watching an ant farm where the ants discover fire.

Mark my words: earnestness is the future of comedy. (Irony is the past, and naturalistic conversations are the present, thanks to Mr. Apatow.)

  • The "new sincerity", say.

    I don't however, think Top That is sincerely, earnestly good. It's clearly not winking; but sincere, earnest goodness would be the breakdancing in a Breakin' movie, not the rapping here.

  • While I do think irony is the past (and that God...I quite liked it when Mr. Show started, but now it's irritating) I'm not sure what to call this;

    I went to the Uber-hip, super-popular UCB "Myspace" show. The 17 or 18 year old girl they interviewed about her myspace page was pretty funny, but everything was cheeky, or everything was a lie.

    That was her default picture because she claims she's really into animal fighting lately.

    That, oddly, was the one thing she said that I believed. Animal fighting is pretty funny, and I'm sure she's into it for the sheer comedic value, but I don't know what to call that.
